Chapter 6

Sable crawled into bed behind Jocelyn, having heard her coughing.

“Jocelyn, are you okay?” Sable asked, reaching out to touch Jocelyn’s shoulder.

Jocelyn turned over. “I don’t feel too good.”

Grimacing, Sable touched Jocelyn’s forehead. “You feel warm,” she said, getting out of bed.

She got the thermometer and put it in Jocelyn’s ear, touching the button. When it beeped, she looked at it. She grimaced again.

“A hundred and one, babe. We should probably take you to the hospital.”

“Let’s try some Tylenol first, okay?” Jocelyn said.

Sable looked back at her, not wanting to agree, but knowing that Jocelyn was just tired of feeling lousy, and going to the hospital meant tests and sitting around.

“Okay,” Sable said.

Two hours later, Sable saw that Jocelyn’s breathing was labored, even though she was asleep.

Touching Jocelyn’s shoulder, she shook her gently. “Babe?”

“Hmm?” Jocelyn murmured tiredly.

“Your breathing is labored. I’m worried.”

Jocelyn turned over onto her back, taking a few deep breaths and coughing some. Finally she nodded.

“Something’s not right. Let’s go,” Jocelyn said, sounding resigned.

Sable got her up and called for Jake, who helped her get Jocelyn into the SUV.

Gage and Kit were asleep when Gage’s phone rang. Reaching over, she picked it up. Kit sat up. She could only hear Gage’s side of the conversation.

“Hello? Yeah, this is Gage McGinnis… Yes… She’s where? Okay what happened?” she asked, with a worried glance at Kit. “Okay, well, I’ll be right down. Thank you.”

After Gage hung up, Kit asked, “What was that about?”

“That was Cedars. Gun was brought into Emergency.” She got out of bed and started to pull on her jeans.

“What! What happened?” Kit asked.

“Don’t know. They said that they called me because I’m on her emergency contacts, but Sable brought her in.”

“Do you want me to come with you?” Kit asked, already trying to figure out what she’d do about Caitlyn.

“No,” Gage said. “It’s okay, babe. Caitlyn is here; if she wakes up you need to be here. God only knows what kind of stupor my mom is in at this point.”

“Okay,” Kit said. “She’ll be okay, Gage,” she said, referring to Jocelyn.

Gage drew in a deep breath as she sat down to pull on her combat boots. “I hope so.”

An hour after they’d gotten to the ER, Jocelyn was in a room, and things moved fast for Sable Sands. The doctor had told Sable that Jocelyn had pneumonia. It was common during chemotherapy—the body’s immune system was compromised, so it was easy to get infections.

“We’re giving her a breathing treatment and some medications that should help clear her lungs. You can see her in about a half hour,” the doctor told her.

“Okay, thank you,” Sable said.

She’d gone down to the cafeteria to get coffee and was on her way back to the waiting room when she saw Gage. She glanced over at Jake, who had, as usual, trailed her everywhere she went. His lips twitched when he saw Gage. It was hard to miss the stride and fiery red hair. Sable stopped dead in her tracks, just as Gage looked up and saw her.
